Don’t Let Back Pain Keep You from Staying Active

Updated: Sep 22, 2021

Are you having trouble with pain in your lower back? If so, you’re not alone! Almost 85% of adult American’s struggle with severe back pain and visit a physician each year. Most physicians in the area will recommend a chiropractor in Ithaca and Cortland right away, but you can always find one on your own. In today’s blog, we’re covering the things you need to know, like what causes back pain and how to get back pain relief in Ithaca and Cortland from Barton Chiropractic.

What Causes Back Pain?

Typically, by the time you visit the chiropractor, they won’t be able to just look at you and tell you what’s wrong; we use tests and imaging to learn more. The most common causes include

● Muscle or ligament strain: Your spine is naturally made to move and doesn’t really like sitting still for too long. It’s best to ease into high-intensity activities that require a lot of movement, or you could strain your back muscles and ligaments. A short full-body stretch can mean the difference between crippling back pain and a fun day at the park with the kids.

● Ruptured Disks: The spine has disks or “spongy cushions” between your bones that can bulge or rupture and cause discomfort.

● Arthritis: Arthritis is actually a large umbrella term used for many different health conditions that affect the spine and cause swelling, pain, and stiffness. Acute back pain generally lasts approximately one to seven days. If the pain lasts longer, it’s considered chronic.

● Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis causes your bones in your spine to become weak or brittle and form fractures. Habits like eating enough protein, calcium, and Vitamin D and committing to 30 minutes of movement a day can keep your bones healthy and prevent deterioration. Fortunately, with the proper intervention and care plan, you can still have an active lifestyle. It may just require being more creative and trying new things like strength training or yoga.

Is it Time to Make an Appointment?

Back pain can get better over time with home treatment within a few days, but that isn’t always the case. Long story short, if you’re curious, this is an excellent opportunity to take the first step.
